STEAM IN THE PARK (BALADO) by our Roving Reporter Ross (Coojeebear) Clarkson
On a wet Sunday morning, May 7th saw six GoldWings depart from Kinross Services, en route to the Steam Rally at Balado. On arrival at the park we were given our very own army tent to shelter us from the rain, but I would like to thank Alistair for bringing his gazebo even though we did not use it, however we did use the table, chairs and tea/coffee making facilities. The weather did get better and the organisers ask if we wished to ride round the park to which we all replied “yes” except Robin who, being so shy and introvert, hid himself away for fear of having his picture taken and being noticed Yeh! Yeh! Yeh.
As you all now we never turn down the opportunity to show off our bikes, we even had our very own commentator (Kevin) promoting Scotia Wings we then spent some considerable time giving rides to the public. One of our more recent members Tam Swankie enjoyed it so much there was no stopping him. During a short break Drew, another of our more recent members decided to go for a walk about and came back laden with more lights for his wing - god knows where he is going to fit them. (I’m glad somebody knows). Having been kept busy with the public and giving rides on the bikes again it got me thinking (2nd time this year) it may be a good idea to take some charity boxes to these events and collect donations. (Only a thought at this stage.)
Just as we were about to depart, on the horizon we could see a lone handsome figure of a man (remember we did help out with Guide Dogs for the Blind) coming towards us on a shiny red GL1500 “Well done Kenneth”. Hope it brings as much enjoyment as we have had and more.
Sadly we have to report the loss of a member who has just purchased himself a Harley So good luck to you on your travels Norrie all the best from Scotia Wings.
Well I’ll close now and hope to see more of you at our next outings.
P.S. Drew (Duggie) has a new four legged friend, find out more from the website. I’m sure Karen can help with some photos. Another good and enjoyable day out with friends.
Easter Sunday 2006 - Yorkhill Run by Ross (Coojee Bear) Clarkson
On a windy but bright Easter Sunday 2006 saw 10 member’s bikes leave Harthill Services en route to the Easter Egg Run to Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow organised by MAG. (Motorcycle Action Group) Picking up more Wings en route giving us (Scotia Wings) a total of 13 bikes, not a bad turnout for the 2nd run of the weekend Arriving in Glasgow at approximately 11am to find other bikers had already started to gather. Norrie had brought his trailer along, this being put to good use for carrying all the Eggs and Cuddly Toys donated previously. They say his trailer is NOT welded to the bike but we beg to differ. 12.30pm sharp we were ready horns blasting and engines roaring (some more than others “MINE”) the police escort ready and a bear in the air (police helicopter that is) off we went, down Sauchiehall St. and around Glasgow, over the M8 along Great Western Road, the run was so big you could still see the bikes coming down Sauchiehall St. as we crossed over the M8 on to Great Western Road. The good people of Glasgow had lined the streets to cheer and wave all of us on, the atmosphere brilliant, onward we went to Anniesland Cross and down the Express Way with horns still blasting and lights flashing.
We arrived at Yorkhill Hospital about one hour later and going down the ramp to the car park all you could see were bikes, bikes and more bikes. The local radio welcomed us and kept us entertained and with Cookie doing what he does best found us a personal chaperone, someone he knew from Arran, “where?! I hear you all say” to escort us to some of the kids wards and chat with them before handing over the eggs and soft toys and giving the troops a chance to get their photos taken by the press. After about an hour some members had to leave due to prior commitments. It was just a great day and for such a good cause.
As I write this the sum collected so far is £24,000 and rising, the number of bikes in attendance was 8,000, we hope to see more of our Scotia Wing members there next year and a big thank you to all who took part.
Friday 7th - Sunday 9th June 2003 - Emmerdale Weekend by Robin (Fiona) Cook
Friday 7 June 2003,
and the destination was Aberdeen for the weekend. Scotia Wings members: The Cook family, Alistair & Berenice McNeill, Eddie & Jenny Robertson were staying at the Tree Tops Hotel in Aberdeen, and were later joined by Alex Findlay & Jane Warrander. Coincidentally, the cast of Emmerdale were also staying at the Tree Tops Hotel!!
Scotia Wings new PR man - Robin Cook - got talking to members of the cast, together with their line production manger and producer - at the bar, funny enough!!!! Through conversation with the line production manager, about the Weekend's events and the ways in which Scotia Wings could help raise the profile for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust - Scotia Wings also managed to benefit themselves, by being invited to "The Woolpack" for lunch and to meet the cast again. Scotia Wings members and the cast of Emmerdale mixed very well during the evening and shared lots of stories! Kenneth was then invited out clubbing with the younger, female members of the cast - to act as their bouncer for the evening!!
Alex arrived back on the Saturday morning, to help arrange the convoy of Goldwings, which were to lead the cast of Emmerdale to Banchory. A fantastic day was had by all and after the day's events Scotia Wings, together with other motorbikes, chauffeured members of the cast back to the Tree Tops Hotel.
On the Sunday, the remaining cast members were playing in a charity football match at Portlethen and Scotia Wings were asked if they too would attend to pose with their Goldwings and help raise money for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust. During the whole weekend's activities Scotia Wings members were made to feel as if they were also ***stars*** and all members are already looking forward to our run-out to "Emmerdale", which will hopefully be sometime in September 2003.
Saturday 31st May 2003 - Blackford Games by Tom Bywater
As usual Blackford Games had a good turnout of bikes, Tosh with his shiny 1200 - we all thought the bike would need a rest at the end of the day but it was Tosh that fell asleep. He looked like that big guy from Gulliver's Travels. JC had his polish out trying to get a Genie out of his black beauty and John was knocking his Pan out trying to make it into Wing. But the star prize went to three wheels Alex and steady Eddie for their grand tour around the show ground and the great collection that they made, the booby prize went to Robin Hood after he left his merry men and carried on around the arena in hot pursuit of a Police Woman????.
Sunday 25th May 2003 - Perth Market by Jenny Robertson
There were 5 bikes attended the show Alistair, Eddie, Rab, Steven and Jim Mackintosh, It was a very enjoyable day although a bit showery but the rain didn't keep the people away and we had plenty folks to talk to.The guide dogs paid us a visit as they had a stand in the main hall so we did a bit of collecting for them and raised quite a bit of cash. All in all it was a good day and Eddie ended it by a good Samaritan act and took a broken down bike to Callander for a vintage rider and earned himself £ 20 which he gave to the charity.
